The Science of Skincare: An Educational Summit

Drs. Patricia Ferris and Ted Lain discuss the inaugural Science of Skincare Summit, with an inside look at what dermatologists and aesthetic skin providers can expect from participating in this full-day expert program.

“You need to understand the basic science behind all the ingredients and the [skincare] formulations in order to effectively recommend a regimen and effect change in the skin in the most beneficial way,” said Ted Lain, MD, MBA. “And so Dr. Ferris and I believe that it’s high time for a conference to really focus on this, because of the growing importance of skincare both in medical dermatology, as well as in the aesthetic space.”

Drs. Lain and Patricia Farris, MD, are co-directors of the Science of Skincare Summit, scheduled to take place in New York City, November 6, 2021.

“The Science of Skincare Summit is something that we are really excited about because there’s no other meeting that addresses this very specific subject of topical skincare,” said Dr. Ferris. “We are going to make it available to physicians or physician extenders—people who are practicing in the aesthetic space, estheticians and the like—because we believe that this type of education is not only important but it’s really needed to fill a void or a gap that exists in education today.”

The full-day educational event includes sessions on skincare basics, skincare in clinical practice, the business of skincare, and an afternoon with industry.

“We’re going to start with a primer in the morning where we’ll cover major ingredients—the retinoids, antioxidants, the hydroxy acids, the probiotics—things that are now being found in topical skincare products,” said Dr. Ferris. “In the middle of the day we transition to ‘how do you use it in your practice?’, ‘how does this get implemented for your patient care?’ and we’re going to have discussions on pre- and post-procedure, what type of products we should use for treating patients who have specific skin concerns. Then a little bit about the business of skincare—‘how do you integrate dispensing products in your office?’—and I think these are all really important subjects for people who are in practice.”

The meeting is designed primarily for physicians but also welcomes extenders and can be attended either virtually or in person at the Essex House in NYC.

“For the estheticians in particular we’ll be providing a certificate of attendance to show that they have spent the time to really become more skincare experts than they currently are,” said Dr. Lain.
