Hawaii Tops List of States With the Most Google Searches for Skin Conditions and Treatments

Hawaii residents have the highest number of skin condition-related searches, according to new data from Alinea Medical Spa.

The study analyzed Google search data for various skin conditions and treatments across all 50 states. Hawaii recorded 491.18 searches per 100,000 residents, which is 95.5% higher than Mississippi, the state with the lowest search volume at 251.19 searches per 100,000 people.

New York ranked second with 394.34 searches per 100,000 population, while California came in third with 391.90 searches. The top five was rounded out by Nevada with 387.48 searches, and Rhode Island, just behind with 385.73 searches.

Search Topics

What are people searching for? Eczema treatment was consistently the most-searched skin remedy across all states, the study showed. In Hawaii, searches for “eczema treatment” averaged 495 monthly searches.

“Eye bags” treatment was the second most-searched term in Hawaii, California, and several other states. Specifically, Hawaii recorded 326.67 monthly searches for eye bag treatments.

The study also analyzed nationwide search volumes for specific skin conditions, with bruises topping the list at 123,178 monthly searches. Eczema and psoriasis followed with 100,400 and 74,483 monthly searches, respectively, the study showed.

Keratosis pilaris treatment appeared in the top five searches for many states, ranking fifth nationwide with 72,707 monthly searches.

Southern states generally showed lower search volumes for skin condition treatments. Climate appears to play a significant role in skin condition prevalence, with many tropical or sunny states like Hawaii, Nevada, and California ranking high for searches.

“These search patterns reflect what we see in clinical practice across different regions. The high rate of searches in Hawaii isn’t surprising given the intense sun exposure and humid climate, which can exacerbate many skin conditions,” says Ammar Mahmoud, MD, of Alinea Medical Spa in New York, NY. “The study also found interesting patterns in age-related skin concerns. The high search volume for eye bag treatments in coastal states like California and Hawaii may reflect greater social pressure regarding appearance in these regions. Simple treatments can often provide significant improvement for this common concern.”

About the Survey Methodology

Monthly average search volume data for each state in the U.S. was taken from Google Keyword Planner based on searches over the past 12 months. A list of common skin issues was analyzed based on searches for: [skin_issue] treatment, how to fix [skin_issue], how to get rid of [skin_issue], how to cure [skin_issue], [skin_issue] causes, and [skin_issue] symptoms. The combined search volume for each condition’s six terms was calculated and then used to rank them from highest number of average monthly searches to lowest (nationwide). The top five most-searched skin issues in each U.S. state was then found, as well as an overall ranking of U.S. states by their combined search volume for all skin issues per 100,000 population.
