L’Oreal SA has issued a voluntary recall of all lots of La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Duo in the U.S. due to concern that benzene is in the product, according to multiple media reports.
The independent U.S. Lab Valisure has found high levels of benzene in acne treatments containing benzoyl peroxide (BPO) made by several companies. Last year, Valisure filed a petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting a recall of products affected by the elevated levels of benzene to allow regulators to investigate. The FDA has not responded to the petition yet.
“In close coordination with the FDA, we have proactively decided to remove the limited remaining units of the current formula of Effaclar Duo from retailers,” L’Oreal said in a statement to Bloomberg. An improved formulation of Effaclar Duo will soon be available, the Company noted.
