Dena Antowan, a pre-med student at the University of Texas at Austin, opens up about the physical and emotional challenges of living with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and shares how her diagnosis helped shape her career goals. She uses social media to raise awareness about living with chronic skin conditions. Her dedication to advocacy and public health earned her recognition as one of 45 recipients of the AbbVie Immunology Scholarship. “I grew up on the border of the U.S. and Mexico, so something that is hugely important for me is returning to that border region and being that female dermatologists that I wish so badly that I had,” she says.
