Collagen supplements are widely touted as the secret to ageless skin, and the latest supplement to enter the US market—Elasten—has the science to back up its claims.
The fruit-flavored, drinkable collagen has been Germany’s No. 1 collagen supplement for more than 10 years. It contains bioavailable and bioactive collagen peptides along with Vitamins C and E, biotin, and zinc.
“It replenishes collagen from within, and patients get the benefits from that as an adjunct to what we do in the office,” says New York City-based Dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, at a media event announcing the product’s US launch. “These supplements can prolong the effects of neuromodulators, fillers, or laser procedures,” says Dr. Engelman, who takes the Elasten supplement daily.
“The company did the studies,” she says. “We know that this is going where it needs to go. It’s improving barrier function, hydration, and skin structure,” she tells The Dermatology Digest. Studies have shown that when collagen peptides are absorbed into the dermis, there is a more than 30% increase in skin thickness, she says. Additionally, hyaluronic acid levels increased by 18.08%.
