Dr. Aunna Pourang Wins WSU’s 2024-25 Svider Memorial Resident Scholarship Award

Aunna Pourang, MD, a Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine Dermatology Resident, received the 2024-25 Peter Svider Memorial Resident Scholarship Award.

The award is presented annually to a graduating resident or fellow in a graduate medical education program in recognition of achievement in research activities across residency training. The Svider Award recognizes a resident who has achieved a high level of scholarly productivity.

The Svider Award is named for Peter Svider, MD, who completed a residency in the WSU Department of Otolaryngology in 2018. Dr. Svider published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and eight book chapters. He died in 2021 at the age of 34.

Dr. Pourang will receive a plaque commemorating her award from Dermatology Program Director Steven Daveluy, MD, at the 2025 residency graduation ceremony in June.

Dr. Pourang graduated from the University of Florida Medical Honors Program (combined BS/MD) and was a research fellow at institutions in Los Angeles, CA, and Detroit, MI, before matching into the WSU Dermatology residency in 2022.

During her residency training, Dr. Pourang won two Seed Grants (in research and curricular development) from WSU Graduate Medical Education. She also served in leadership and mentoring roles. As a member of the Dermatology Resident Research Committee, she contributed to quality improvement research, assisted medical students and other residents in project development, and helped organize the department’s biannual research symposium. She also participated in a Dermatology Medical Mission to Mexico.

After graduation, Dr. Pourang will focus on providing dermatologic care in rural and underserved communities in California.
