Masks and Post-Procedure Skin

Dr. Joel Cohen discusses skin issues that arise from mask tension and friction on post-procedure facial skin.

Dr. Cohen is the director of AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery in Greenwood and Lone Tree, Colo., and advisory board member for The Dermatology Digest.

Maskne isn’t the only mask-related skin issue dermatology patients may experience. Masks have also been associated with wound dehiscence, which can affect post-procedure facial healing, according to dermatologist Joel L. Cohen, MD.

In a recent discussion with The Dermatology Digest, Dr. Cohen cautions that tension created by the ear loops on masks can negatively affect post-procedure results on the face. He offers simple solutions for easing ear loop tension to help patients avoid unwanted superficial wound separation and minimize irritation to reepithelialized skin.
