Cannabidiol (CBD) cream may improve wound healing in patients with epidermolysis bullosa (EB).
Fully 55% of patients reported improvements in wound healing, and 45% displayed wound stability after one month of using Avicanna Inc.’s RHO Phyto branded Ultra CBD Topical Cream, the Company reports.
The cream is an oil-based 3% CBD localized cream.
The study enrolled 20 patients (14 male patients and 6 female patients) with an average age of 17.3 years with various subtypes of EB including dystrophic (60%), simplex (30%) and junctional (10%).
Evaluation of self-reported itch and pain scores were reported in 65% and 50% of patients, respectively. Of the study participants evaluated, 45% continued to use treatment for more than 6 months.
“The use of RHO Phyto branded Ultra CBD Topical Cream is a novel topical therapeutic option for EB patients, providing symptom relief and potentially aiding in wound healing with good tolerability,” says study author Elena Pope, MD, MSc, the head of dermatology at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in a news release. “Further prospective studies are needed to substantiate these findings.”
